These high-quality productions are engaging narratives based on the experiences of real people, created with input from medical professionals and patients themselves.

Becoming a Team
Embody Hector, an inexperienced caregiver, during his orientation process in a long-term care community. Experience supportive and unsupportive co-worker interactions and identify ways to build trust and respect with your teammates.

Personalized Care
Embody Melanie, a nurse’s aide supporting Magda. Magda is an elder with mid-stage dementia who is in constant motion. Melanie’s priority is keeping Magda safe and happy. Experience communication challenges and identify successful approach techniques for meeting Magda’s unique needs.

Problem Solving
Embody Gloria, a 75-year-old woman living in a senior community. Gloria has mobility issues and is confined to a wheelchair. It takes two staff members to transfer her. Experience vulnerability and anxiety as you rely on others for basic human needs and identify ways to preserve dignity through collaborative problem-solving.

  • Recognize the importance of timely responsiveness and how to provide exceptional customer service even when staffing is challenged.
  • Acquire customer service skills such as positive body language, active listening and methods of diffusing tense situations.
  • Identify proactive approaches to preserve dignity and promote independence for older adults.

Elder Safety & Well-Being

Caregiver Burnout
Recognize signs of burnout, understand the associated risks to caregiver and care recipient, and identify available resources for support. Experience boredom and helplessness as you embody Hazel, a 75 year old woman living with severe chronic pain and early stage dementia.

Intervention and De-escalation
Embody Abby, a lead nurse’s aide who faces a sensitive situation involving her resident, Heloise. Observe a potentially abusive situation, determine how best to keep an elder safe, and experience a confrontation with a challenging family member.

Trauma-Informed Care
Embody Harold, a veteran with an extensive history of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Experience PTSD flashbacks and associated anxiety symptoms, identify common triggers and self-regulating practices

Users Learn:

Caregiver Burnout

  • Identify dangers associated with caregiver burnout (medication errors, careplan violations/shortcuts, irritability, lack of patience, impaired decision making).
  • Recognize opportunities to engage people living with dementia in meaningful activities that enhance quality of life and reduce behavioral manifestations.
  • Identify community resources to support informal caregivers and empower those wishing to age in place.

Intervention and De-escalation

  • Identify strategies for successfully diffusing tense situations and redirecting elders using effective communication and active listening skills
  • Gain confidence in initiating difficult conversations with family and co-workers to advocate for elder safety
  • Have a clear understanding of their role in preventing/reporting suspected/known abuse

Trauma-Informed Care

  • Gain empathy and understanding of PTSD and identify common triggers
  • Use positive approach tactics to safely and effectively support older adults experiencing PTSD flashbacks
  • Promote self-regulation techniques such as deep breathing, guided meditation, and environmental adjustments (earplugs, music)

Social Isolation

The Frank Lab

The learner will embody Frank, a 72-year old Caucasian man, beginning a few months after his wife’s passing. As Frank attempts to navigate his new way of life, the learner will experience destructive impacts of social isolation and understand how it can overlap with loneliness, negative or absent family relationships, poor health, lack of access to transportation, and inability to access community services.

The second module allows learners the opportunity to embody Frank in the same storyline, but this time experience how with the proper support, Frank can have better health, connect with his family and community, and find more purpose and meaning in his life.

Users Learn:
  • Identify the primary factors related to social isolation for older adults.
  • Recognize that the ability to engage with and/or connect to people, services, and interventions may be the difference between life/wellness and death/disease for a person who is socially isolated.
  • Acknowledge that reducing social isolation takes the effort of both individuals AND adequate networks/systems of social support
  • Be able to describe the primary ways that relationships, services, and interventions can help mitigate the effects of social isolation

Trans Health & LGBT Aging

The Eden Lab

In the first module, the learner will embody Eden, a trans woman, and experience a series of personal encounters throughout the lifespan that are typical, defining moments of many transgender older adults living today. In the second module, learners will embody Eden as she engages with other members of the LGBT community, and also have the opportunity to jump into the perspectives of other LGBT older adults who identify as LGBT to explore the topics of homecare, healthcare, family, and housing.

Users Learn:
  • Some of the biological and physical reasons why a person may identify as transgender
  • Ways that transgender people have unique challenges in their romantic & family relationships
  • Common experiences transgender older adults have had that involve decades of discrimination, stigma, negativity, and trauma
  • Verbal and visual cues can be used to help a person or environment feel safe and inclusive for LGBT older adults
  • Affirming and inclusive procedures and practices can be used to ensure there is no assumption made that an older adult is heterosexual, OR to feel safe disclosing if they are LGBT.
  • LGBT older adults often have less support from their biological families and may have “family member(s) of choice” that are involved in decisions related to health and aging.
  • They can provide compassionate, respectful care for an older adult by putting aside private/personal beliefs and/or judgements about a person’s identity.

Macular Degeneration and High Frequency Hearing Loss

The Alfred Lab

The learner will embody Alfred, a 74-year-old African American man with macular degeneration and high frequency hearing loss as he spends time with family, visits the doctor, and receives a diagnosis. As Alfred goes about his daily life, the learner will understand how deficits in hearing and vision affect communication and impact emotional wellbeing.

Users Learn:
  • Understand how hearing and vision loss can mimic cognitive impairment.
  • Identify effective modes of communication between the patient, family, healthcare personnel and systems that contribute to patient quality of life.
  • Pinpoint ways people with macular degeneration can use technology and assistive devices to improve quality of life.
  • Describe what happens inside the eyeball as macular degeneration progresses.

Alzheimer's Disease

The Beatriz Lab

The learner will embody Beatriz, a middle-aged Latina woman as progressive Alzheimer’s Disease causes changes in her brain. From the onset of symptoms to late stage disease and the transition to residential care, the learner understands the profound effect Alzheimer’s has on daily life, from processing and cognition to relationships and emotional wellbeing.

Users Learn:
  • Identify ways that AD affects communication in the brain.
  • Recognize changes in visual and auditory processing that can disrupt activities of daily living.
  • Identify ways that a person with AD can be redirected, calmed, and engaged.
  • Find effective ways to work as a team between patient, family, and healthcare personnel to contribute to patient quality of life.

End of Life Conversations

The Clay Lab

The learner will embody Clay, a 66-year-old veteran with stage IV, terminal lung cancer as comes to terms with the reality of his diagnosis. Clay transitions to hospice care and, as he enters the final stage of life, the learner understands the importance of clear, compassionate communication about end-of-life decisions and about what to expect in the final days.

Users Learn:
  • Learn to sensitively navigate conversations after difficult diagnoses
  • Practice communication with family and members of the healthcare team about transitioning to hospice care.
  • Identify physical changes inside the body as it nears the end of life.
  • Determine end-of-life symptom presentation, management, and control.

Lewy Body Dementia & Parkinson’s Disease

The Dima Lab

The learner will embody Dima, a Lebanese-American immigrant living with symptoms of both Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease as she transitions from life at home to a residential community. Through her experience, the learner will be able to identify the differing symptoms of these two conditions and how to manage care as symptoms evolve.

Users Learn:
  • Recognize the symptoms of LBD and PD.
  • Identify effective ways to manage anxiety, agitation, or hallucinations that often present with these conditions.
  • Recognize when caretaker burnout, financial burden, or safety may necessitate help from professional care agencies and/or residential communities.
  • Identify ways residential communities can tailor care for older adults with unique needs due to their culture as well as disease presentation.
